Here are the highlights from my presentation last Saturday at BarCamp Nashville.

The Conversion Funnel is a tool that can help you understand the following:

  1. How can I break down my visitors site behaviors.
  2. How can I understand all of the steps of my website’s success metric – sale, lead or registration.
  3. Understand that what you think you know about how your visitors interact with your site is unimportant.
  4. Understand that online marketing and website usability are now sciences – they’re not an art.

What are the goals of the Conversion Funnel?

  1. Break down your conversion process to determine where the opportunities for success are within your website.
  2. Understand why your site visitors don’t continue to the next step.

What does the Conversion Funnel look like?

Conversion Funnel

At each step within the funnel, your visitors are going to make 1 of 3 decisions:

  1. Continue to the next step.
  2. Go to other parts of the site.
  3. Exit the site.

What works? How can I begin to optimize my site and take advantage of the Conversion Funnel?

  1. Stop guessing. Start knowing. Perfecting your Conversion Funnel is a lot of trial and error - you need as much information as possible.
  2. Invest in analytics.
  3. A/B test your registration/shopping cart steps & order. One little tweak can have a profound down-line impact.
  4. Eliminate ALL intra-registration, on-page links. No distractions on the pages will mean that your visitors will pay attention to the steps you’ve outlined for them.
  5. The offer will impact the results. If you’re going to catch fish - you have to bait the hook.
